Grimspound are a Border Morris side based in Newton Abbot, named after the ancient settlement on Dartmoor beneath Hameldown Tor. Formed in 1994 as an all-male side, and inspired by this landscape, the original dancers also wanted to celebrate maleness, dancing with big sticks and distinctively heavy, stomping style.

Since then, Grimspound has opened its doors to all genders and we have adopted a more light-footed approach (and a stray dancing bear) and do our best not to take ourselves too seriously. We have a large repertoire of original dances, one of which (Tinner’s Rabbits) is now danced all over the world.

We are a border side, our dancing distinguished by the clashing of sticks and the howling of dancers as they spin, jump and hurl each other around.

We do not do bells.

We do not do hankies.

We wear dark, tattered jackets in blacks and purples. Our hats adorned with long, ragged feathers. Our faces disguised in patterns and smudges.

No two of us look the same.

Amongst the more traditional dances of Upton-Upon-Severn and Brimfield, we have many of our own originals, added to year on year by some of our very talented dancers. Recent additions include the fabulous Merlin Rising and the fast and furious Flipside by our very own Jon O, and the theatrical stickcrobatics of Fool's Revenge courtesy of Powderkegs.

You should meet our officers!
